OUR PLACE

YSP Media was proud to work alongside Junction Arts as creative production partner on Our Place, an ambitious regional arts project that brought together communities from across the East Midlands through film, performance, visual arts and craft, culminating in a live broadcast.

Inspired by the groundbreaking 1967 satellite broadcast Our World, the Our Place project reimagined the idea of connecting people through a shared cultural experience. Led by Junction Arts in collaboration with six arts organisations across Derbyshire, Nottinghamshire, Leicestershire and Lincolnshire, Our Place celebrated the unique identities, creativity and stories that define each community. The six organisations featured in the broadcast are Junction Arts, City Arts, High Peak Community Arts, People Express, Soft Touch Arts, Surtal Arts and The Hub.

Working closely with Junction Arts, participating artists and project partners, YSP Media helped curate and produce the feature-length broadcast, ensuring that a diverse collection of creative works came together as one cohesive viewing experience. Our role extended beyond technical production, working collaboratively to shape the narrative, visual language and pacing of the broadcast, allowing each film and performance to retain its individual voice while contributing to a larger story about place, belonging and community.

Alongside the broadcast production, YSP Media also produced several of the films featured within the programme. Each explored place through a different artistic lens, from dance and spoken word to filmmaking, dance, textiles, virtual reality and music. Working sensitively with artists and participants, we had the privilege to create films that reflected the authenticity of each community while maintaining a cinematic quality that elevated the work for broadcast.

According to Junction Arts, throughout the project more than 50 participants collaborated with 27 artists to create work that reflected the diversity of the East Midlands and demonstrated the power of creative collaboration. Bringing these voices together into a single broadcast required careful editorial planning, collaborative storytelling and a production approach that balanced artistic integrity with technical excellence.

Projects like Our Place are at the heart of what we do at YSP Media. We believe film has the power to amplify community voices, celebrate lived experience and create meaningful connections between people and places. Working with Junction Arts and its partners was an opportunity to help tell stories that might otherwise go unheard, while producing a broadcast that reflected the creativity, resilience and diversity of the region.

The finished programme stands as a celebration of communities across the East Midlands, a collaborative production that demonstrates how film can bring together different perspectives into one shared experience, connecting audiences through creativity, culture and place. In addition to supporting the broadcast and delivery, YSP Media produced a documentary entitled ‘Making Our Place’ which follows the journey of the creatives and organisations involved in this ambitious project. MAKING ‘OUR PLACE’

The ‘Making Our Place’ film tells the story of how seven arts organisations and their vibrant communities across the East Midlands came together during unique creative residencies. The film captures behind the scenes interviews with producers, artists and participants involved in the ‘Our Place’ film project. Nominated for Best Documentary at the Midlands Movies Awards 2023.
