A Brief History of YSP Media - Over 15 Years of Creative Filmmaking

YSP Media was first formed under the name Yellow Shoe Productions in September 2005 by a group of media students united by the shared enthusiasm of making exciting and creative film projects. Within two years of working together the group had amassed a significant number of amateur short films culminating in the release of the zero budget action feature film CJ Simmons: Elite Mercenary in May 2007. Co-founder and current YSP director Christopher Bevan set his sights on taking up filmmaking as a career and over the next two years spent time developing a follow up multi-chapter action/thriller web series entitled Dissolution (2008).

In September 2009 Christopher began studying Film & Video Production at the University of Derby and Yellow Shoe Productions became YSP Media. A new website was launched and subsequent projects all became part of the growing archive of films that had been made under the production company name. Whilst at university, Christopher Bevan and by turns YSP Media became involved with a pro-active and forward thinking group of filmmakers and this collaboration has continued to this day in industry.

With experience in feature films and commercials under our belt, YSP Media began to branch out further in 2012, producing new dramatic film content with our award winning short films Caught in the Headlights (2012) and Love & Other Chairs (2014) gaining traction at film festivals around the world. This expansion continued with a foray into the world of television in 2013 as we co-produced the pilot episode of the sitcom Jobseekers which has since gone on to be optioned by a Top 100 TV Production Company and is currently being pitched to the BBC, ITV and Sky amongst others. Recent short films have included post-apocalyptic short Hollow Men (2016) and sci-fi Transcended (2016), both of which have screened around the UK. Our 2018 sci-fi short film Make do Or Mend (2018) received a special mention in the Sci-Fi London 48 Hour Film Festival and went on to be seen by a global audience through the DUST online platform across their website and social media channels.

We're currently in the early stages of development on feature film Only Us and Knights of St. George as well as a number of other exciting short and feature length productions. Our partnership with producer Belinda Basson and Dreamfusion Productions has been instrumental in the creation of these upcoming projects and we're looking forward to further expanding this relationship over the years to come. The next project to come out of this collaboration will be the ambitious short film thriller The Other. Next on the release slate is the debut short from writer-director Matthew B.C. Connective Tissue which premieres in October 2020.

Throughout our time working as a production company we have strived to expand our client base as our corporate and commercial productions have increased in volume, with the organisations we have filmed with including English Heritage, Chatsworth House, Derby County Football Club, Ellesmere College, Breast Cancer Campaign, Visit Derby, International Comic Shows and more. Whilst working as a freelancer, YSP director Christopher Bevan's work has also seen him take on projects for Network Rail, The Samaritans, Chiltern Railways, 123 Reg and ABB. With experience in collaborating and developing work with a wide array of organisations and production companies, clients can rest assured their work is in safe hands with our ever expanding team of filmmakers and freelancers. We've also been thrilled to build our documentary and factual work portfolio with projects such as JA40: The Junction Arts Story receiving funding from the Heritage Lottery Fund and Seen Ya Rights: A Creative Journey For Change being developed through the QUAD in Derby. Recent documentary projects have included Women of Impact: Defying the Odds which has reached a global audience through the streaming platform AfroLand TV after successfully premiering on digital channel Vox Africa UK. We are looking to continue our documentary production as we move beyond 2021 with some exciting projects in early development.

After over fifteen years of history and many changes, YSP Media is and will always be home to creative and original filmmaking.
